I am still working at that awful swimming pool...    But on the plus side--my deep water skills have taken off like a ROCKET!
And I've built quite a few desktop and a even a couple of laptop computers. They all Run Linux of course!!!  |

OMG did i hear LINUX :) *high 5* I'm a linux user myself ! I started testing out each distros from distrowatch.com back in 2007 !! Fast-forward ---> now i use PCLinuxOS, Mandriva, Bodhi (englightenment). But in the past I've tried almost ALL the distros out there !
I build computers for fun too !!! My latest one (which I fully built 2 days ago) :

I have PCLinuxOS 2010 KDE running on a Pentium Four desktop that had been tossed into the trash. It was completely stripped but the PCU and motherboard were still intact and I rebuilt that Bad Boy to better than new!
I have a LiveCD with Mandriva but I think it was/is corrupt. I could use it only in the LiveCD mode but not install it. I also gave Sabayon a try but I discovered I would have to configure all the Restricted-Proprietary stuff manually. I already had been through that hassle with Ubuntu 8.10 . I learned how to do it quite well but the command lines are different and I was not in a mood to hunt for it...Lazy I guess. 
Currently, I besides PCLOS, I have Ubuntu 11.04& 10.04 running on two separate laptops, Mint and Fortmac Tux( only as a livecd), Puppy 5.2( ditto Mactux ) running on a discarded Dell desktop I was given.
I have 8.10 which is declared EOL( ppffftttt ) running just fine on another old Pentium machine and Ubuntu 9.04 running on a IBM Thinkpad. Right now my main goal is to learn about the various command lines so I can understand multiple distributions esp the less well known better. |

oh yay sensei :) I've tried all those and I've always hated ubuntu series. Linux Mint is a very well-crafted OS, but its not as eye-candy as PCLinuxOS / Mandriva with all the Compiz Fusion and Emerald eye candy.
I still prefer PCLinuxOS over Mandriva cuz I'm more comfy with APT-GET commands than the RPM commands.
But wow.. you're exactly like me .. i've ressucitated lots of thrown-out PC. I used to collect the trashed HDD drives too (be it 40GB or 120GB). But since then, I've thrown then away because the 500GB and 1TB are uber cheap now and makes more sense because they're more efficient.
I used to want to save every single old ATA HDD that I've collected and like.. stack up 6x 40GB HDD but doesnt make sense anymore, because it 6x 40GB HDD = 240GB but will be SLOW (ata) and POWER HUNGRY (6x power cable).
oh oh u should def try Bodhi linux - its lightweight like MacPup (the englightenment version of PuppyLinux). http://bodhilinux.com/
not to switch topic, but have u ever heard of Soweto Gospel Choir from Africa ? They're amazing !! can't wait for March 2012 when they tour USA !

And Thanks for the Choir link. Yes. I had heard of them but had forgotten about them  I think it was either a Oprah Winfrey or Christmas special that first brought them to my attention. But it's good to be reminded.  |

 I downloaded Bodhi last night( Oct. 30, 2011 ) and not a moment too soon!  My Ubuntu 8.10 machine's hard drive went Kaput!  Halloween Day----A Hell of a Trick I must say.. --- So I am going to buy a new HDD and install Bodhi as the Primary OS....
By the way, got some great Music from a Russian Artist that you might like to know about but round up the links.. |

sorry to hear about your HDD crash - my new 2TB western digital caviar green sata II intellipower 64MB cache just died on me too !!! i use it for recording tv shows everyday, and some avi file are as big as 14 GB and thats probably why it crashed ( formatted as NTFS).
I read somewhere before.. avoid western digital hdd ! so what brand did u get ?
and how dyu like Bodhi linux ? isn't it sooooooooooooo beautiful ?

Sorry to hear that your HD croaked too...It's a Major Bummer. I had another disaster to happen before installing Bodhi Linux! Originally, I was going to install Bodhi on the Former Ubuntu 8.10 Machine when The PCLOS went to Hell!. I had just updated it and added some new wallpapers when I abruptly lost the ability to Boot the Machine. Something regarding the Video Drivers corrupted. I have the exact error message somewhere but at the time I searched Forum after Forum based on the error message and found nothing useful.
Of course, I tried Booting with Command Line and Terminal but could get never get it to work.... As I recall the problem was quite common and a lot people resorted to reinstalling the OS.
This brings me to your question! I like Bodhi very much. Because I decided to install over the PCLinuxOS 2010 KDE Edition. I must admit it took some getting use to Enlightenment but once I got the hang of it...I really customized my Setup. And like you said--it is very beautiful. Plus, I enjoy having those Penguins roam around my desktop.
As for the Ubuntu Beast....I still have not replaced the hard drive..I was shocked to see how the prices had gone up! I recall during the Summer..My email was full of deals on HDs and now even relatively small refurbished( although I never planned on a used drive--I was opting for a Minimum of 500GB New ), I read that Flooding in Thailand caused this problem.
I was shopping for a Hitachi or Seagate Drive because I too had read about Western Digital being prone to early failur and I have had good results with Hitachi on my laptops. I hope to get the replacement before the end of January. I will make a Dual Boot with PCLOS KDE 2011 or Full Monty the Edition and MoonOS 4 Neak...I really like the way the Cambodian Artist complied the OS. In fact I use MoonOS 3 Makara in LiveCD mode because it is so COOL.. 
Bodhi Linux has saved my backside on my remaining desktop and is going to be a permanent fixture. I promise to post about the Russian music next time.. |
