I'm proud to say it's completely legal here in South-Africa, as it should be the world over. If two people love each other, what does their gender have to do with anything. Love is love.
Thanxx to the Netherlands for being the fore-runner in this subject, helping break down barriers of prejudice, injustice and discrimination.
The more countries that follow, the better.
Would be interesting to know which countries allow it.
The ones I can think of are:
South-Africa
The Netherlands [and colonies I suppose]
Belgium
Sweden
Germany
Finland
Norway
Denmark
Switzerland
Canada [Recently I believe]
[Correct me if I'm wrong]
Can't think of any others.... Anyone else know any others? |
Is it just that countries? That wasn't many at all... Glad I live in one of the few there it's legal (well, i'm not gay, but yeah) |

Just because some people is homo/bisexual they're not supposed to be treated different.. ;-/ They are just as heteropeople, and we're all human. I think (and hope it will happend) that everyone, no matter colour, gender or anything else are treated the same way all over the world. |

In my church, we had to vote to let gay marriage take place in the church. The vote was defeated which kind of upset me because there is a gay couple that goes to our church (fortunately they were married in another church after the vote) it was really sad because they are such nice people. I guess people just had issues about changing the policies of the church so yeah, you can't please everyone I guess. |

okay its wrong...the government wont allow same sex marriage but yet they allow family members to marry one another....its not like they are hurting anyone...come on now they fall in love with the same sex its not a crime its just a feeling...can u control ur feelings when u fall in love with the opposite sex?no u can not...so they shouldnt be so easy to judge and not allow same sex marriages...i mean come on now some of the most talented musicians are gay/bi/lezbians....look at elton john...hes gay and recently was married to another male...and yet the countries who dont allow same sex marriages respect him highly...but regular ppl who arent famous get lowered down opan and rejected... |

Word, Ashley! I live in Sweden where the bi/gay/lesbians are rather tolerated, but me being bi I still have to take loads and loads of crap.. even if it's legally okay, there's still hell lot of prejudices here as well. People who say that Sweden doesn't judge based on sexuality or gender or ethnics or whatever is just.. so wrong. |

oh of course, England, UK, recently approved same-sex marriages.
So that's another country on the list. Not sure about the rest of the UK though. |

but, the whole UK is one country shouldn't it be in the whole UK then? I mean, it's not like in the states in USA. |

She meant, England, UK. England is just a part of UK, and that's why she added the "UK". Like.. er.. Skåne. ;3 |

I know, but England has same laws like in the other parts of UK. Skåne doesn't have other laws than the rest of Sweden. |

Although England as a part of the UK has more independence than Skåne, I think.. I mean, the basic laws they have together and stuff, and then they have variations? I don't know, I don't live there. >.> |

The Bill of Rights is actually more specific than that. It states ten principles that protect citizens from the government in certain situations where a person's rights can be violated (ex: In court, while being arrested, etc). However, it says absolutely nothing about marraige, gay or straight. Doesn't mention it once.
BUT, as I stated before, the broad principle under which the U.S. government is supposed to function--in fact, the principle that was the standard for writing the U.S. Constitution in the first place--is that of the government's treating all its citizens equally and being blind to circumstances of birth (gender, race) and religion. It seems like a really obvious decision to me, but the politicians are still arguing over it because they don't operate by principle--they operate by popularity. So, even if something's clearly not right (like denying homosexuals the right to marry), it won't be fixed if most people don't believe there's something wrong. This is one of the places where absolute democracy fails us. A shame that this is allowed to happen.

Parts of the United States, too. Since the U.S. is a little different from most countries in the way it distributes its laws, it's worth mentioning that gay marraige and/or civil unions are legal in parts of the U.S. But your gay marraige doesn't count if you move from those designated areas. The state of Massachusetts recognizes homosexual marraige and the state of Vermont has civil unions. I don't recall if there are other places. |

Jojoboo and Blessgirl:
[Jojoboo, I'm a he, not a she ]
Skåne is a province of Sweden - therefore all the laws of the Kingdom of Sweden apply to all it's provinces.
The United Kingdom (UK) however is a collection of 4 separate countries (not provinces) - England, Ireland, Wales and Scotland. They each have their own laws that they abide by.
This is similar to the European Union. It is made up of several countries, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France, etc, however they all have their own separate laws.
Understand?
Although most people refer to England as the UK, that is a common mistake. The UK refers to all 4 countries, like the EU doesnt refer only to one country, but a group of countries. |

New Jersey also has civil unions, but Massachusetts is the only one that has legalized gay marriage, and some people here are still trying to get the state legislature to recall that law, which is stupid. |
